The Twelve Days of Christmas Blog Challenge - Day 11

For The Twelve Days of Christmas Blog Challenge, I'm on the eleventh prompt: "11 Memories From Christmastide Throughout Your Life."



The guiding thought is: "This time of year is often seen as one of reflection, so why not spend a few moments reflecting on your life so far and share eleven memories that occurred at some point during the various twelve days of Christmas you’ve lived through so far."

I looked back on photos I've taken throughout the years and put them in order by the December date (not the date of the year).

December 25, 2010 - Olivia, who is 7 years old, is being watched by Lucy. Every year, Olivia wakes up early on Christmas Day; and she and I open the gifts in our stockings. Often times, the pets are right by us curious as to what is in the wrapped packages.


December 26, 2011 - The girls enjoyed playing with their new toys and doing the hands-on activities of science kits they received. Here Olivia is using a hammer and chisel to reveal gems. Even though she was wearing glasses, she put the safety glasses on "just in case" something happened.


December 27, 2009 - Belated Christmas Dinner. There was a major snowstorm on Christmas Eve and morning that prevented us from leaving our farm on Christmas Day 2009. We spent the day shoveling out on the 25th and 26th; and Sophia, Olivia, and I were able to spend a nice belated Christmas with my parents and brother.


December 28, 2014 - Olivia decided it was time to cut her hair. Off came more than eight inches which was donated to Children with Hair Loss.


December 29, 2015 - Our 4-H club did a special multi-week program at the nursing home where the girls and I volunteer. The picture below is of Emily - who was 98 years old. She was an accomplished sewer and teacher. It was a joy to know her, and she always had a good story to share about her life. We learned so much from her during the time we knew her. She died on October 17, 2016. It was a loss for us all.


December 30, 2008 - Sophia's 8th Birthday. She wanted to be surprised about what her birthday cake looked like. So, in addition it to be hidden during the day, she wanted to be blindfolded as it came out. I'm not sure what we used for a blindfold...a napkin? A placemat? A piece of fabric? At any rate, it looks like we tied it with twine.

She had her favorite unicorn mug . The placemats we were using were actually napkins my mom made when she and my dad visited us when we were living in Charlotte, North Carolina.

There were fabric mills or outlets that we visited. You could purchase fabric quite inexpensively. It was fun to pick a bunch out and then have my mom (who enjoyed sewing) create tablecloths and matching napkins for our first apartment/home.


December 31, 2012 - Eagle in the front oak tree. This was a significant and meaningful bird to see on this particular day. It was the one-year anniversary of when I visited both my parents - my mom was in the hospital and my dad was in the nursing home.

Little did I know that the following day, I would be called by the nursing home to come in to visit. It looked like my dad was not doing well and wouldn't make it through the evening. It ended up that I stayed there for 3 1/2 more days until he died.

Seeing the eagle reminded me of one of my parents' favorite songs at church (On Eagle's Wings) and one of the songs we played at their 25th wedding anniversary (Wind Beneath My Wings).


January 1, 2013 - Annual Chinese dinner on New Year's Day at our favorite Chinese restaurant. We have gone out to eat at a Chinese restaurant on January 1st since we lived in San Francisco. It became a tradition that we have done each year since then (with the exception of 2012 when I was at the nursing home with my dad).

One of the things we encourage one another to do is to try one new thing that we haven't eaten before....or at least haven't eaten at that particular restaurant.


January 2, 2012 - My dad was dying on this day in 2012. I was by his bedside from January 1st through January 5th when he died. Family members and friends visited during this time period. We were with him around the clock to make sure he received the care he needed and that he was not alone.


January 3, 2011 - Crafting after New Year's Day. There's some time to relax and take it easy the first week of January. One year we made beeswax ornaments to hang in the window. They smelled so good and the sun illuminated the patterns of the ornaments which was beautiful to see each day...especially during cold winter days.



January 4, 2011. One of many meals that the girls ate at the granite table. It was a lower table so that Olivia's feet could reach the floor. It also was a suitable table at the time because we had dogs who were respectful of the food on the table and didn't try to take some for themselves.

When Olivia grew taller and we got a dog who was a bit too curious around meal time, we switched to the wood table.

I'm not sure why I took this picture. Perhaps it was because one of the girls made a new recipe for a homeschool project.


At any rate, it documents an ordinary day in our lives. Sometimes those ordinary days are just as enjoyable as the special days. It gives us time to connect as a family and relax.

Countdown to Halloween - Celebrating Halloween! - Day 7

Halloween was on a Monday this year, and on Tuesday the girls go to a homeschool co-op. We leave the house by 7:50 a.m., so that means that we don't stay up late on Monday nights.

This - combined with blustery/rainy weather - made it a relatively easy decision for them not to go trick-or-treating. This is the first year that they have not gone trick-or-treating since they were little.

What they still wanted to do, however, was participate in the costume parade at the nursing home.


They have been doing this now for a few years and enjoy it. The staff and some of the volunteers dress up; and then walk around and talk with residents. The residents vote on their favorite costumes.


Many of the residents were wearing hats so they could feel like they were dressed up and participating as well which was fun.


The parade takes place in the dining room and quite a few residents - and sometimes their families - enjoy seeing the variety of costumes.


It's fun for the girls to talk with the seniors and hear them share memories or receive compliments on their costumes.


At the end of the parade, those in costumes gather for the annual picture. The costumes this year were impressive - especially the trio from the Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins & the Chimney Sweep. All of them showed a lot of creativity and Halloween spirit!


Since we weren't trick-or-treating, the girls suggested we start a new tradition. They asked for pizza from the local pizza place.


For dessert, we had Lemon Chess Pie (basically a lemon meringue pie without the meringue) that Olivia made.


The recipe came from her Five in a Row cookbook that she is finishing this year.

Labor Day Treats - Red, White & Blue Shortcake + Orange Lemonade

We made a couple special treats to enjoy with our indoor picnic on Labor Day. In addition to bratwurst, hot dogs, baked beans, and potato salad, Olivia and I made Red, White, & Blue Shortcakes from the Five in a Row Cookbook.

We also made Orange Lemonade that is from a pin on Pinterest. It led to Holidays Central that had a special focus on healthy food to serve on Labor Day.

Orange Lemonade


Ingredients

1 1/4 cups water
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup lemon juice
3/4 cup orange juice
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel (we didn't use)
1 teaspoon grated orange peel (we didn't use)
3 cups water
Ice

Directions

Boil 1-1/4 cups water and 1 cup sugar to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Allow to cool and then pour into a pitcher.

 Stir in 3/4 cup lemon juice, 3/4 cup orange juice, 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel and 1 teaspoon grated orange peel.

Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour. Stir in 3 cups of water and serve over ice.

101 Days of Summer Fun - Update #14

This is the final week of 101 Days of Summer Fun. This is what we did:

Saturday, August 23 - We relaxed during the day and chose to do whatever we wanted to do. It's been nice to have free time and choose to spend our time how we want to spend it.

Sophia and Paige went out in the evening for their monthly activity.

Sunday, August 24 - Sophia, Olivia, and I took my mom to the church festival at St. Anne's in Hamel. We had a very generous and delicious meal of chicken, dressing, gravy, coleslaw, rolls, beans, and apple crisp.



After we ate, we went to their garage sale and ended up finding tennis rackets and covers for only $5 each. The girls also found hard-cover books for only $1. Great deals!

We played a game of Bingo, and then it was time to head back home. We all had a nice time together.

Monday and Tuesday, August 25-26 - These were days of clean up and repair. The dumpster that has been sitting in the front yard along the driveway for what seemed like most of the summer thanks to multiple home reconstruction projects is finally gone. What a relief!

The soft-water system was repaired and the old system hauled off on Tuesday. Now we have soft water again plus a reverse-osmosis system in the kitchen since our water has tested with a too-high of a nitrate level for drinking because of being surrounded by farmland that is being traditionally farmed with lots of chemicals.

Wednesday, August 27 - Mary B. came over to spend the afternoon with Sophia and Olivia. They made a chocolate zucchini cake that had a ganache filling in it. It was one of the best cakes we've ever tasted - super moist and lots of flavor.



Thursday, August 28  - Sophia spent time preparing for her presentation at the State Fair tomorrow while Olivia finished reading a book that she's been working on for a while now.

Friday, August 29 - Sophia and I headed to the Minnesota State Fair early in the morning so she could be at the information session by 8:30 a.m. She was in the first judging group for food preservation which was nice.

Both of us were surprised that the other youth in her group were all boys. One did jam, another jelly, and a third pineapple salsa. Sophia did a project on drying fruit.


After her judging, she changed from wearing a dress to more comfortable clothes. We went around the fair and looked a natural playground exhibit.


We spent some time in the Eco-Experience building and learned about a variety of things related to preserving the environment. We even raced little cars that had vegetables attached to them down a racetrack.

Around lunch time, we went back to the 4-H so Sophia could get her t-shirt that they give out each year (this year the color was purple). After that, we enjoyed a healthy and well-balanced lunch.


There were chicken fajitas filled with grilled vegetables, rice, and beans. You could add salsa and sour cream if you wanted to on top of that. They also had a plate of nacho chips with cheese. There was homemade salsa on the side which was delicious. There were two types of bread with butter; key lime cake or Rice Krispie bars; watermelon, cantaloupe, or fruit bowl; and chocolate or white milk.

After lunch, we went down to see the judges' decision about who won the grand champion award for food preservation.

When we found Sophia's project, I noticed the purple sticker next to her blue ribbon sticker. Sophia won the grand champion award!


Needles to say, she was SO happy! She had her picture taken by the 4-H representative who was taking photographs of all purple-ribbon winners at the state level.


Afterwards, we went to the butterfly house where we spent a lot of time enjoying the butterflies that flew onto us and/or we placed on us.


It had been a long day, so Sophia just wanted to spend time at the butterfly exhibit. As we walked out, we saw Lee at the KOOL-108 booth and stopped by to say "hi" to her.


We got a Icee on the way out to enjoy on the ride home. 

Saturday, August 30 - We were going to do monarch tagging today, but we all decided that with it being so cold and rainy that it wouldn't be as enjoyable walking through wet grass and trying to catch monarchs. Perhaps next year.

Sunday, August 31 - Both of the monarch caterpillars we found in our backyard and that we have been feeding milkweed leaves, are now in their chrysalises. Now we wait as the caterpillars transform themselves into butterflies over the next couple of weeks.



We'll release the butterflies as soon as their wings dry and are strong.

Monday, September 1 - We took the dogs and went to Chuck and Don's Pet Food Outlet so we could use the gift card that Aspen won in the Northwoods Humane Society Summertime Foto Fling contest.

We got a special bowl with deep groves in it (patterned like a flower) to put Aspen's food in it. It helps dogs who eat very fast slow down. Getting their food is a bit more work - kind of like it is in the wild.

Also bought some food with bison in it (which they love to eat!), a harness for Aspen for walks since she's strong and pulls which is not a good combination on her neck and trachea, and some treats.  Even with all those items, we still have $35 leftover to spend on more items!


When we came home, Olivia made a recipe from her Five in a Row cookbook that she's been working on since third grade. She has about one-fourth of the recipes left in the book to make.


With each of the recipes, I take pictures and we've put them into her cookbook (it's like a scrapbook/cookbook) so she knows what the food looked like and the process she went through to make some of the recipes.

Today's recipe was red, white, and blue shortcakes.


Aspen found a great spot to lay down right at Olivia's feet. She was hoping that Olivia would accidentally drop some fruit or dough.


We had the shortcakes after dinner. They were delicious! You can't go wrong with fresh fruit and homemade shortcakes...not to mention real whipped cream.


So, as I look back on the summer, it is very different than what I envisioned. Although I had anticipated doing a fun activity each day of the week during the summer, that is far from how it played it.

At the beginning of the summer and about mid-way through it we were doing different activities each day. Some were ones I planned, and others were ones that simply came up and we did those instead.

By the middle of the summer, however, we were undergoing a major and unexpected reconstruction project on our upstairs bathroom and the duct work throughout the home. That greatly changed what we were able to do - both in terms of leaving our house (since construction workers were here daily for over a month) and financially (since it was a major investment that we had not planned on undertaking this summer).

We found that some of our most enjoyable time this summer was simply relaxing. With our homeschool schedule and activities, many days during the majority of the year have some sort of activity going on. To have a block of time where we didn't have to go anywhere or do anything that was deemed "educational" or related to homeschooling was a pleasant and well-needed respite.

Homeschool Planning for 2013-14

Since early-August I've been planning the 2013-14 homeschool year. I registered for an online class called "Sketching it Out :: A Four Week Planning Session" led by Lisa Boisvert Mackenzie.

Originally, it was a four-week planning session. However, it has since expanded to eight weeks. The original participants went through the four-week planning process; and then could choose to begin again. This has been helpful to re-visit some of the earlier topics covered and fill in sections that I didn't have time to address during the first process.

At any rate, the focus of the class was an exploring the rhythm of the year in the context of planning a homeschool year. We began by getting a planner. I had several on hand, so I picked a small, maroon 3-ring binder. I added a pencil case and lined paper.

I also added some information I printed out from Lisa's website and links; some of the ideas from conversations on the Yahoo group set up for the class; and other ideas from the internet that focused on creating rhythm in the home and within homeschooling.

The next step was to create a school calendar. For us, that means a yearly calendar since I consider homeschooling more of a learning lifestyle than a set period of days when the girls learn. That being said, there is a "start date" and "end date" of the more "formal" homeschooling. This year, that is September 3rd and May 30th respectively.

Normally, we go on a "not back to school" trip the day after Labor Day for a few days. This year, however, we will not be going on a trip. Instead, we will do a "not back to school picnic" on September 3rd - the day after Labor Day.

Also on the calendar are days that there are no school or a holiday. This year on holidays we will focus on activities related to the holiday rather than doing traditional school work.

The calendar also shows birthdays and anniversaries (e.g., Adoption Days); breaks; and when we start and end the time period where we focus more on alternative ways to learn (e.g., 4-H, county fair, state fair).

Next, I looked at the different holidays that we will be celebrating and learning about this year; and found pins on Pinterest for them. We will be celebrating additional holidays and special days (e.g., New Year' Day, Mother's Day), but these are the core ones that had quite a few ideas that I wanted to remember.

I created a wheel of the year after I found a pin that I liked. using a free PDF pattern from Daily Colours.

Then I looked at the weekly rhythm that I would like to start doing this year. Some of the ideas are based on Rudolph Steiner's beliefs and/or what some families using a Waldorf methodology/lifestyle follow (e.g., color of the day, grain of the day) while others are what works best for our family.

I noted the color of the day, grain of the day, activity of the day that involves Sophia and Olivia, and an activity of the day for me. Some of the activities that I do, the girls can help (e.g., Soup Day), but most are personal things that I want or need to get done.

Once the color of the days were set, I thought that the best way to implement that was by having them be a part of the meal. For example, it may be the color coasters, place mats, tablecloth, table runner, and/or candles that we use.

I also looked on Pinterest for ideas for food that incorporates the different grains. I was surprised at the lack of recipes for millet. Apparently it's an under-rated grain.

I also made a rhythm of the week wheel. Daily Colours (the website mentioned above) has a free PDF pattern. However, I ended up using only the back and pointer. The colors on Wednesday and Thursday were the reverse of what I wanted to do in my family. (I prefer the flow of red-orange-yellow-green rather than red-yellow-orange-green since it follows the look of a rainbow.)

So, I made the circle and divided it into seven sections. I wrote the daily information into each section, and then colored in each part with the appropriate Prismacolor colored pencil.

One of the other things I did that ties into both the monthly holidays and special days; and the weekly grains was go through a binder that I have with lots of recipes that I would like to try. The recipes were divided by type (e.g., appetizer, main dish, bread, vegetables). This did not lend itself well to easily finding recipes.

To address this challenge, I went through all the recipes and pulled out ones that I'd like to try during a particular month, at a specific holiday/special occasion, or that included the grain of the day.

After the recipes were divided, I put each grouping into a plastic sheet protector. In this way, I can easily find recipes that use peaches, for example, since they are in the August sheet protector. (This is the month that peaches are readily available in Minnesota.)

The next step for me was to figure out what to teach on a daily basis. Honestly, this is where I got stuck for well over a week. The girls each have some work left to do from the 2012-13 school year. Since they enjoyed what they were doing, I wanted to continue with it into this year. There were other subjects or activities that I let go in favor of new ones that we will be adding this year.

The other challenge is that funds are quite limited this year. That means there is no extra money to purchase curriculum that I would like to try. Rather, I went through the resources I have on hand as well as look at free resources online to create the curriculum for the 2013-14 homeschool year.

As I have done in the past, I look at the girls' interests, skill levels, educational levels, and learning styles. Although both girls have a strong interest in reading and literature, Sophia has done particularly well with Sonlight's curriculum.

Thankfully, Sonlight includes so much into one level of of curriculum, that it can be stretched out into 1 1/2 - sometimes 2 years. In Sophia's case, she will complete what she started last year by January 2014. At that point, she will move onto Ambleside Online since it's a free curriculum and follows Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy.

Olivia will be starting with Ambleside Online in September. Since she is working with the local elementary school to receive assistance with some learning, auditory processing, and short-term memory issues, some of her subjects are covered in a way that works well for her: through workbooks.

This is quite a different path than both a Waldorf and Charlotte Mason approach, however, for Olivia it works well. The workbooks are supplemented by "living books" from the library which gives her some quality reading on subjects addressed in the workbooks.

She also will be doing Beyond Five in a Row. During the first semester, she'll be working on four books (two fiction and two non-fiction). There are a wide variety of hands-on activities for her to which she is looking forward to doing.

Using free printable sheets from Donna Young's website, I did a plan for these subjects as well as using Sonlight's, Ambleside Online's, and Beyond Five in a Row's schedules for 9 weeks. This will take us to November 2nd. At that time, I will complete another 9 weeks of planning based on what has and hasn't been completed. I have the schedule for the academic portion of the girls' year in a purple 3-ring binder. There are tabbed-dividers that separate the plans by week.

Organized Home has many free printables that will be invaluable this year in terms of keeping organized. The tabbed sections in the white 3-ring binder include:

- Contact numbers - includes emergency numbers, frequently-used numbers, and a list of birthdays/anniversaries

- Menu planning - this has a plan for theme dinners when things get a bit more hectic and we don't want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, or making meals for various school subjects (e.g., meals that focus on different states, meals from Beyond Five in a Row).

Some of the meal themes dovetail nicely with the grain of the day. For example, on Monday the grain is rice so I chose "Asian Night" as the theme. On Saturday, the grain is corn so I thought "Mexican Night" might fit well. Here is the weekly plan:

Sunday - Sunday Dinner - meat with potatoes and carrots. The leftover meat can be used for sandwiches during the week. Have a very light meal in the evening if anyone is hungry (e.g., cheese, crackers, fruit).

Thursday - Leftovers

Friday - Soup Night with Fresh Bread

I've also included several printables from Organized Home in this section including weekly and monthly meal planners.

Shopping List - Copies of a shopping list. One will be posted in the kitchen to add to each week. In this way, when we run out of something it can be immediately added to the list.

Food Inventories - There are sheets for the freezer, pantry, and larder. The larder, in our case, is part of a closet that holds heavier canned goods (e.g., peaches, pears, tomatoes, applesauce) as well as the top shelves of a built-in bookcase that hold lighter canned goods (e.g., jams, jellies, salsa).

Recipe Locations - There are pages that have the name of favorite recipes, the cookbook/source, page number, and comments.

Monthly Rhythm - This is my chart that has five columns: month, mood, symbols/color, activities, celebrations.

Monthly Sections - I have a tabbed section for each month. It starts with August right now because that's the current month. Once this month passes, it will go to the back of the monthly section so that September is first.

Each section has a list of the holidays and when they are in 2013-2014. I've also included some ideas, instructions, and information that relates to some of the holidays. Following that is the plastic page protector that has the recipes for the month.

Seasonal Chores - Organized Home has a free printable that has a fall and winter checklist; and spring and summer checklist.

Weekly Rhythms - This is the typed version of the daily color, grain, learning activity, and home activity. There also are daily to-do sheets from Organized Home.

Patterns for Meal Time Accessories - I printed out some ideas for making tables look welcoming and pretty. There also are patterns to create napkins and place mats.

Blessings - There are some blessings I've collected that I would like to print out on cards made from watercolor paper that the girls painted.

Daily Rhythms - This section is a reminder of what I would like my daily rhythm to look like:

Wake up before the girls and:
- Get dressed
- Let the dogs out, take them for a walk, and feed them
- Make hot chocolate
- Write in my journal
- Start the laundry (if needed)
- Review the meals for the day, and take out anything that needs to be thawed
- Prepare breakfast

I'd like to play a board or card game with the girls each day. Integrating an element of play into each day is a goal I'd like to work on during 2013-14.

The next section focuses on family values. In terms of family values, I'd like to have the following words describe my home: contentment, love, acceptance, comfort, spiritual, truthful, generosity, helpfulness, exploring, learning, togetherness, openness, happiness, caring, compassion, wonder/discovery, reflective, excitement, enthusiasm, gratitude, and service.

The last section focuses on a family mission statement. I have a rough draft of one; and would like to work on finalizing that during 2013-14.

I also included several daily to-do lists from Organized Home. These will come in handy - especially during November-January when there is a lot to be done on a daily basis.

Daily Chores - This section has ideas for keeping a home clean. I have a proposed schedule for daily cleaning that I am interested in seeing if it will work or not this year. It is:

Sunday: Bedrooms
Monday: Mudroom
Tuesday: Offices
Wednesday: Bathrooms
Thursday: Dining Room
Friday: Living and Family Rooms
Saturday: Kitchen

Following that are more comprehensive daily chore lists that I pinned from Cedar Ring Mama. At some point during Autumn 2013, these would be nice to review and adapt to my home.

First Aid Inventory and Medicine - Organized Home has a inventory sheet for first aid supplies. I also would like to list everyone's current medications they are taking.

Bills -  There are forms on Organized Home that are for each month. The top half has lines, and the bottom part has the name of the bills, date they are due, and the amount owed. There also are important dates and a monthly calendar on each sheet.

Social/Support/Craft Groups - This section will have information about any groups that the girls and I are participating in and/or leading. Once the groups begin in September, this section will have more things in it and may be sub-divided for each group.

So, what happened to the maroon binder? It has information that I still want to read, think about, and integrate into our daily lives and homeshool. This will be an ongoing resource that I can refer to, add to, and adapt the 2013-14 homeschool plan by as I make my way through the information.

I am very grateful to have taken this online class. It will add a dimension to our lives and to homeschooling that was not fully developed or - in some respects - completely absent. The plan is definitely a work in progress as I see what feels right for our family and what doesn't feel like a good fit.
