Countdown to Thanksgiving - Day 1

Today marks the first day of the Countdown to Thanksgiving. For the next 12 days (plus Thanksgiving), Sophia and Olivia will take a sheet of paper out of the Thanksgiving Countdown Calendar.

The Thanksgiving Countdown Calendar hanging up
by the wood stove.

On it, there will be instructions for activities to do, a recipe to make, a fact about Thanksgiving, a gratitude quote, and a Thanksgiving joke.

Here's what we read and did for today:

Thanksgiving Fact:

Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She is also the author of the popular nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Activities for the Day:

For the next 12 days, the girls were instructed to "write down one thing that you are thankful for each day. They need to be different things…and not just the name of a different pet."

Today Olivia was grateful for her family and
Sophia was grateful for her friends.

I gave each of them a card that says, "I am thankful for..." In this way, they have a nice card to write on and keep to look back upon when they get older.

Scratch-art turkeys that the girls made.

They also made a scratch-art turkey. The idea for this came from this pin on Pinterest. The instructions to make it lead to Art Projects for Kids.

Olivia coloring in her turkey picture with oil pastels.

Basically, the each used oil pastels to color the turkey.

Sophia colored so dark that she used a Sharpie pen
to go over the turkey outline again.

They pressed really hard so a lot of the color would be on the paper.

Sophia showing the colored turkey.
Although both girls colored the sky and grass,
they didn't press the oil pastel down hard enough.
Thus, when the black oil pastel is put over it and they scratched it off,
the color underneath wasn't bold enough to show.

Then, with another oil pastel they covered over the turkey.

Using a bamboo skewer, they scratched off most of the black oil pastel. There is still some of the black oil pastel on the final image which is the intended look.

Gratitude Quote:

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has. ~Epictetus

Recipe of the Day:

We made Fall Trail Mix. The recipe came from this pin on Pinterest that led to Make Bake Celebrate.

This recipe is simple and requires no baking. Some of the ingredients in the recipe we were able to find, while others we couldn't so we substituted something else.

Sophia and Olivia used 1/2 cup each of the following items that they mixed together in a big bowl:

- Caramel Bits
- Fall Candy Corn Peanuts (used sunflower seeds instead)
- Brown Sugar Quaker Squares
- Fall M&M’s (used regular M&Ms instead)
- Dehydrated Apples
- Peanut Butter Chip (used Reeses pieces instead)
- Life Cereal (used original flavor - although there were two other flavors that were available)

Fall Trail Mix that Sophia and Olivia made.

We all liked the mix and thought it has a good variety of healthy and not-so-healthy components in it.

Thanksgiving Joke:

If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? (Pilgrims!)
